USPHS Commissioned Corps Advancements/Promotions
Promotion is based on Training and Experience (T&E), Time in Grade and Time in Service.
For example:
As an entry-level dentist, your undergraduate course work and dental school courses
count as eight years of training credit. Therefore, if you have just graduated,
you will receive eight years of training credit and 0 years of experience credit.
This equals promotion eligibility to the temporary 0-3 grade.
| Pay Grade | Total of Training + Experience |
|---|---|
| 0-2 | 4 Years |
| 0-3 | 8 Years |
| 0-4 | 12 Years |
| 0-5 | 17 Years |
| 0-6 | 24 Years |
For applicant with over four years of experience, please contact the dental
recruiter (1-800-IHS-DENT or mailto:dentaljobs@ihs.gov) for more information regarding rank
and promotion.
Note: Dentists with more than eight years in active-duty credit from
another uniformed service should contact a dental
recruiter (1-800-IHS-DENT or mailto:dentaljobs@ihs.gov) to discuss options.
