Richard
Valachovic, D.M.D., eyed the scrawny teenager. Jude was unkempt and dirty, but
also witty and personable. Jude lived on the streets of Boston after running
away from a brutal home situation. Then one day he was stricken with intolerable
pain in his jaw. Jude sought help from a mobile van providing dental services
to homeless kids in which Dr. Valachovic volunteered.
At
the time, Dr. Valachovic was the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the Harvard
School of Dental Medicine in Cambridge, Mass. He was a pediatric dentist by training
and practice, and an educator by profession. Dr. Valachovic took the youngster’s
medical history and became increasingly alarmed. Something was wrong – something
more than an erupting wisdom tooth and more than the absence of having a bed
to sleep in at night.
“I
recognized that Jude had an underlying cardiac condition that was being aggravated
by his dental situation,” Dr. Valachovic said. “It was severe.”
