Are you ready to explore current vacancies, apply for a position, or apply for an externship? The 14,500 employees of the Indian Health Service (IHS) provide health care to more than 1.6 million American Indians and Alaska Natives in 35 states. These states are divided into twelve geographic regions called "Areas". Applicants may request a specific location in any of the twelve Areas and, though placement is subject to position availability, every effort will be made to accommodate the request.
Positions are available in cities and towns of all sizes, but the greatest need is in small towns and rural settings. In these locations you can live surrounded by spectacular natural beauty. You can enjoy all the adventure and recreational activities these areas have to offer including hiking, biking, fishing, rock climbing, boating, or other outdoor activities that appeal to you. After serving at least two years at any particular site, you are eligible for, but not required to, transfer to a new location.
Whether you choose the Federal U.S. Public Health Service (PHS), Federal Civil Service, or Tribal path, click on How to Apply. You will find that IHS has made the application process as simple and straightforward as possible.
